Hebrew 12:1-2 | The Joy Set Before Him: God’s Glory Shown Through His Love
Hebrews 12:1-2
1. Jesus’ Joy was that the Father would be glorified through His obedience.
(Psalm 40:6-8 John 12:27-28; John 17:1-3)
2. Jesus’ obedience, even in immense suffering lead to the immeasurable Joy of being exalted and glorified by the Father.
(Philippians 2: 5-11; John 17:4-5; 2 Thessalonians 1:5-12)
“from all of eternity, Christ has loved his people.” – Charles Spurgeon
3. The Joy that was set before Christ was the salvation of His people and their worship and enjoyment of Him forever according to His great love.
(John 15:12-13; Romans 5:6-11; lamentations3:22-23; 1 John 4:19; John 17-9-10,13,19,22-26)
“Jesus is not only separating Himself from something, in this case, sin—He never did sin—He’s separating Himself for something, or actually for Someone. It’s not only a negative idea, but a profoundly positive one. Jesus is talking not only about His holiness but also about the intensity, the intense zeal of His loving commitment to His heavenly Father. He’s thinking too about His loving commitment for us.” — Sinclair Ferguson
Take away:
Just as Jesus had Joy set before him as he saved us, we can look forward to the Joy of being with him as we run this race with endurance.
(Psalm 4:7-8; Heb 12:1-2)
