Sunday School Groups Are Coming: September 13th

This past Sunday, we announced an exciting change in the life of our church: beginning September 13, our Community Groups will transition to Sunday School Groups.
Following the worship service, we held an informal meeting to explain the reasoning behind the change, walk through what Sunday School will look like, and answer questions. The response was incredibly encouraging, and we are grateful for the excitement surrounding this new season.
Because not everyone was able to attend, we wanted to provide a fuller explanation of the decision and what you can expect when Sunday School begins.
Why Are We Making This Change?
Our mission is not changing, but we believe our structure can better serve that mission.
Community Groups have played an important role in the life of our church. However, independent Sunday afternoon gatherings have become difficult to sustain consistently because of the challenges presented by larger group sizes, the difficulty of coordinating childcare, and the weekly rhythms of many families. For most, Sunday afternoon is an ideal time to be home and prepare for the demands of work and school in the coming week.
Moving our groups to Sunday mornings gives us a consistent and accessible opportunity to gather for biblical instruction, meaningful discussion, prayer, and fellowship.
We also believe intentional biblical instruction is increasingly important. In a time when biblical literacy continues to decline, the church must help believers understand what Scripture teaches, see how its truths fit together, and faithfully apply God’s Word to everyday life.
Sunday School provides a dependable weekly rhythm for doing that together.
How Does Sunday School Fit Our Discipleship Model?
Our discipleship pathway seeks to help every believer:
- Believe the Gospel through Corporate Worship (Sunday Service)
- Abide in Christ through Biblical Community (Sunday School)
- Obey the Word through Intentional Discipleship (D-Groups/ Men’s, Women’s & Student Ministries)
Sunday School will become the primary expression of biblical community at Hub City Church. These groups will be more than classes that people attend. Our desire is for them to become “little Acts 2 families”—communities in which people are known, loved, prayed for, encouraged, and cared for.
While Sunday mornings provide the regular gathering point, healthy biblical community will continue throughout the week as people pursue one another, share meals, open their homes, meet practical needs, and walk through life together.
What Will Sunday School Look Like?
Sunday School will take place on Sunday mornings before our corporate worship gathering.
The Sunday School hour will run from 8:20–9:15 AM:
- 8:20–8:27 — Childcare Drop-Off
- 8:27–8:35 — Welcome and Fellowship
- 8:35–9:00 — Biblical Discussion
- 9:00–9:08 — Application and Care
- 9:08–9:13 — Prayer
- By 9:15 — Childcare Pick-Up
Each group will work through church-selected material together. The subjects may vary throughout the year, but our studies will generally focus on biblical doctrine, the life and mission of the local church, and faithful Christian living.
The goal is not simply to listen to another lecture. Leaders will facilitate biblical, interactive, Christ-centered, and application-oriented discussions that help everyone understand and thoughtfully respond to God’s truth.
We also want Sunday School to create space for people to share needs, encourage one another toward faithful obedience, and pray together before gathering with the entire church for worship.
What About Children and Students?
Centralized childcare will be available during Sunday School for infants through elementary-aged children.
Our children will spend time learning a question and answer from Spurgeon’s Catechism, followed by supervised play. A catechism is simply a teaching tool that uses short questions and answers to help children learn and remember the foundational truths of the Christian faith. This gives our children simple, age-appropriate biblical instruction while allowing their parents to participate meaningfully in an adult group.
To make childcare sustainable without placing a heavy burden on a small number of people, every adult who participates in Sunday School will be included in the childcare rotation. Our goal is high ownership with a low individual burden. Once sign-ups are complete, we will create the rotation and let everyone know when they are scheduled to serve.
Middle school students will help serve alongside adults in our childcare rooms. High school students are invited to participate in Sunday School Groups with their parents and the other adults.
What About Fellowship?
Moving our groups to Sunday mornings does not mean fellowship becomes less important. In many ways, we believe this rhythm will create more natural opportunities for relationships to grow.
We encourage everyone to make room for:
- Coffee and conversation before worship
- Lunch or time together after church
- Inviting one another into your homes on occasion to build deeper friendships
We also host church-wide potluck fellowships every six to eight weeks following worship—typically in our backyard and, Lord willing, one day in our new fellowship building. Existing events such as May Play Day and Fall Fest naturally replace a scheduled fellowship meal when they occur.
The church can create opportunities for fellowship, but meaningful Christian relationships are built as we intentionally pursue one another.
Sunday School Begins Sunday, September 13th
We are genuinely excited about this new season and believe Sunday School will help us grow together in biblical understanding, meaningful community, and faithful obedience to Christ.
If you or anyone in your household plans to participate, please complete the sign-up form as soon as possible. Even if you assume we already know you will be there, your response will help us assign groups, prepare meeting spaces, organize childcare rooms, and create a sustainable serving rotation before we begin.
