Judges | God’s Faithfulness to Unfaithful People
(9:1-10:5 — Abimelech and The Problem of Evil)

Judges 9:1-10:5

Proverbs 16:4

While God is not and never does evil, the Bible insists that He has good reasons for sovereignly allowing it:

  • To leave zero doubt of human sin

Romans 1:18-32; Isaiah 5:20; Psalm 14:2-3

  • To remind: there are consequences for pride, idolatry, and rebellion

Psalm 7:12-16; Proverbs 16:18; Revelation 22:11-13

“Pain, frustration, broken relationships, violence, and death are not in the world by accident and do not mean that the world or any part of it has slipped from God’s sovereign control. At one level these are the natural consequences of human beings refusing to submit to God’s rightful rule over them. But at a deeper level they are judgments that God himself has placed in the world as continual reminders that all is not well between us and him, that we are not masters of our own fate and cannot rebel against our Maker with impunity.” — Barry Webb

  • To exalt His wisdom and righteousness

Proverbs 1:20-33; Colossians 2:1-4

  • To reveal His long-suffering mercy

Lamentations 3:22-23; Romans 5:6-8; 2 Peter 3:9
