Judges | God’s Faithfulness to Unfaithful People 2:6-15 — Generational Drift

Judges 2:6-15

“Be fruitful and multiply… disciples.” — John Piper

The Old Testament reveals time and again that even otherwise faithful believers can neglect the predictable danger of generational drift.

Psalm 78:5-8; Joel 1:3; Matthew 19:13-14

Faithful Christian parents are called by God to intentionally leverage their position of influence to lead their children to Christ, and then disciple them in the faith.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Proverbs 22:6

“God’s design for the preservation of historical revelation is the family. Within the Christian community the main link between what this generation knows and what the next generation will know is the link between parent and child. [And thus] it is the solemn duty of parents to teach their children about God and the greatness of his saving work. Their salvation may hang in the balance.” — John Piper

Taking our children to church occasionally is insufficient and potentially dangerous

Amos 5:21-24

We must teach and model:

– Godly Character: faithfulness, forgiveness, humility, service, generosity…

– Spiritual Disciplines: prayer, bible reading, worship…

– Biblical Community: time with other Christians for fellowship and discipleship

– Hard Things: repentance and perseverance
